Extra A+ Educators

The school year may be over, but we’re still recognizing our Augusta County A+ Educators of the past few months, and would like to give a huge thank you to all the teachers out there who persevered with their students through it all! We are so grateful for the contributions and investments you make each and every day for our communities.

With that said, we are excited to share our A+ Educators Awards announcement! These awards serve to highlight teachers and staff members at local schools that are nominated by their peers for going above and beyond in their service to their students and colleagues. The A+ Educators Awards are our way of saying thank you to the teachers and staff making a difference. Each of the current winners will receive a gift certificate to The Depot Grille in Downtown Staunton to celebrate their greatly valued success!

Winner:  Kelly Cash
Position: Kindergarten Teacher
School:  Wilson Elementary School

Ms. Cash is a calm and consistent presence in the classroom and with her colleagues. She is masterful at meeting the dynamic needs of students and truly embodies  “Every child, every day”. Kelly works well with families, students, and colleagues alike. She does not shy away from challenges and is always willing to reflect and grow as an educator. Her positive attitude is contagious and she is viewed as a pillar and mentor not only in the school but in the greater community.  We thank her for her collaboration, professionalism, and student-centered approach to everything she does.

Winner:  Krista Garriot
Position: Art Teacher
School: Stuarts Draft Middle School

Krista Garriot does an amazing job of balancing the desire for artistic expression with mastering the skills and techniques needed to bring art to life.  While walking students through the process of creating art and defining who they are through their work, Mrs. Garriott provides a solid foundation of art history and art personalities to broaden her classes into a full experience of the world of creative expression. Mrs. Garriott is incredibly student-centered and uses positive relationships to inspire and motivate her students. She has done an amazing job of growing the Stuarts Draft MS art program, both in terms of enrollment and overall quality of work, during her time. Mrs. Garriott is a teacher who gets the most out of each one of her students and has even had students place at local and state art shows throughout her time at SDMS. We thank Mrs. Garriott for inspiring students to grow through art and creative expression.

Winner: Laura Stump
Position: French Teacher
School: Stuarts Draft High School

Laura Stump has been teaching French to middle and high school students in the Draft area for almost 40 years!  She leads the French Club at SDHS and is always doing projects with students to bring French culture to life.  Laura is creative in her attempts at recruiting students and instilling in them a love of French culture and language.  She recently (and creatively) posted her Manie Musicale 2023 Binge the Cringe to YouTube which has drawn over 6.4K views!  Her classes have food days, and celebrate Mardi Gras and various other French holidays and celebrations.  She enjoys traveling and has led several summer trips with students/parents, and has plans to travel to Canada in the future with them again.  We are fortunate to have such a dedicated and enthusiastic educator working with the students of Augusta County.

Thank you again to these amazing teachers who make such a difference to their students and community!
